DOWN TO EARTH

Catalyzing Constructive Change

Summer Camp

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) invited DTE to facilitate summer camps for students of the BMC run Banganga and Tardeo municipal schools in May 2009. The week long camps enabled the students to build self-confidence through a diverse range of workshops that included arts, craft, dance and basic conversational English.

Summer Camp Finale

The Summer camp finale at both the schools were special days. Students showcased their learning to an audience of proud parents and teachers on the last day of the camp.

Education Program

DTE Learning Centre 2

DTE’s dream of a new learning centre finally came true in June 2009. The second DTE centre runs within the Colaba Municipal School, Colaba, Mumbai on weekday mornings from 9:30am to 11:30am. It reaches out to 30 students from standards 5 & 6. The students are part of the school’s Marathi medium wing.
The curriculum focuses on English, Math, Arts and life skills. The students have had an outing to the Prince of Wales Museum as part of their “Know Your City” module.

DTE Learning Centre 2 resonates with fun learning. Some glimpses of the same.

GOALS FOR TERM ONE

DTE learning centre 1 at Cuffe Parade community

English

  • Grammar: Blend sounds and words, magic ‘e’ rule, nouns and their uses.
  • Understand and write simple sentences. Start working on comprehensions by themselves.

Values

  • Focus on responsibility through comprehensions, projects and simply by keeping track of daily task lists.

Life skills: Horticulture

  • Seamus Dilleen, an Irish volunteer, facilitated a horticulture module with the students. The students are growing plants in their respective homes as the practical element of the module.

Art Program

Students at both the learning centers are building their creative skills through the Art program. A module on sketching skills by volunteer Radhika Agarwal created these works.

Performing Arts Event

The Performing Arts Event this year is a musical that aims to sensitize the audience and participating children about the challenges of the differently-abled. Please mark 12th & 13th December 09 on your calendars as show dates. Rehearsals  for the same are being coordinated every weekend at St. Mary’s SSC school, Mazgaon, Mumbai. One of the biggest highlights of the musical is the fact that the ensemble of 50 actors includes children from the following Mumbai based NGOs:

  • Apne Aap
  • Prerna
  • Salam Balak Trust
  • Smile Foundation
  • DTE

We welcome volunteers who could lend their time and skills for the Performing Arts Event.

Livelihoods program

Ernst & Young invited DTE to sell products. This continues to be part of our effort to put community women on the path to self-sufficiency.
We will sell DTE products as part of Diwali sales at various corporates in October 09. The products we have this year are:

  • Gift-wrapping papers
  • Hand-made envelopes
  • Diyas
  • Plants

DTE Appeal

  • We welcome financial assistance. It could be a very small contribution that could sponsor a child’s education/sports gear for a month/year. All donations to DTE are eligible for tax exemption under section 80G of the IT Act, 1961.
  • We are looking for corporate / individual sponsors for the up-coming Performing Arts Day. DTE is open to branding your organization at the event if you so wish.
  • As part of the Joy of Giving Week, DTE shall soon be creating their GiveIndia Online Donation page. We request you to visit it.
  • Over the years we have sold Diwali products at BNP Paribas, KPMG, E&Y, Tata Consultancy Services and Zicom Securities. We welcome invites from your corporate/social circle to set stall  in your vicinity.
